Flushing CSA (Week 11) Update!

We are getting both baby watermelons and the first of the season’s tomatoes “Sungold” cherry tomatoes. With more tomatoes to follow in the next couple of weeks!  Although cucumbers are back again, check out the 58 cucumber recipes below if you are wondering what to do with your cucumber bounty.  The dog days of August are definitely here!
A couple of important things…..read below.
Fruit Shares start tomorrow August 9!
Note: In order to get fruit shares you had to sign up and pay for them. The fruit shares come in separate crates and only the exact number of bags are provided for folks who bought them. Please remind your volunteer to check the sign-in card for your fruit.

Thank you to last week’s volunteers! We missed our volunteer intern Javier but hope he will be back tomorrow.  Depending on tomorrow’s weather we will determine if we need to distribute from there again.
 
A call out to our members who have not yet signed up or who are able to put in additional time beyond the four-hour commitment this week or in the next coming weeks. And remember, we will sign “community service” forms for high school students if they volunteer with us.

Baby Watermelon – Heads up that these babies are fragile!  Our drivers are super careful with the boxes, but we ask that you too are careful to get them home in one piece.  They will crack simply by being knocked in the wrong way…  A cracked watermelon is usually still fine, as long as you get it into the fridge right away.  Enjoy your watermelon seed spitting contests!  🙂
Storage: In the refrigerator.  Uses: Raw! When to use: Within 3 days.  

Cherry Tomatoes – These are a variety called “Sungold”.  They are super sweet like candy! 
Storage: On the counter.  Uses: Raw/Cooked  When to use: Within 3 days.  Green Beans – We’re moving into the second green bean planting now, so these are fresh, crisp and sweet!
Storage: In airtight storage in the refrigerator. Uses: Cooked When to use:Within 5 days.  

Fennel – Summer fennel is here!  Not a fennel lover?  The recipe below of caramelized fennel with goat cheese will make you one.  Guaranteed.  It’s that amazingly good!

Red Batavian Lettuce – Batavian lettuce loves the summer heat!
Storage: In airtight storage in the refrigerator. Uses: Raw When to use:Within 5 days.  

Red Long Onions –  I love the shape and flavor of these onions.  They are delicious sliced and grilled and then served in salads or on sandwiches.
