Flushing CSA (Week 18)

Hello CSA members,

Hope everyone is enjoying the bounty of fall squash. Last week’s farm photo of produce included veggies that were meant for the Tuesday CSAs (and we don’t get a Thursday veggie photo), so it included beefsteak tomatoes and zucchini which were not in our Thursday share. Now generally we get the same veggies with maybe one item that is different, but we know know the photo confused some members, so apologies for that.

We want to thank our volunteers and site supervisors last week for a job well done! A special shout out to Caroline who graciously filled in for a volunteer who didn’t show.

This week’s volunteers are: Cindy, Martine, Deslyn and Gregory. The site supervisors are Ralph and Larry.  The HS student volunteers are Andrea, Michelle, Vanessa and Marco.

A note to all: please remember to sign in and tell the volunteer if you get fruit, eggs, Lewis Waite products, flower/herb shares. Occasionally a volunteer is distracted and forgets to insist, please try to remember yourself. We have had a couple of folks forget in recent weeks and it causes stress as we wind down and count more cards than boxes left over. Also if you notice anyone wander in off the street looking to buy vegetables, please direct them to the volunteer tables where we have flyers explaining what the CSA is, and how we work.

No egg shares or Lewis Waite extras this week. We thank everyone for bringing back the empty egg cartons. Lewis Waite appreciates it. Once you order, please pay online, as we don’t handle checks or cash.

Flower/herb shares shares this week.

This week we welcome back Spice Tree Organic Spices.

We have new flavors of S & V Jams for sale – Mango, Pineapple and Kiwi.

We are offering an intern position of Media Director to our members’ families, specifically for those in the 10th grade and beyond. It would be a minimum of 5 hours per week and they could do this at our pickups. The position entails maintenance of our Flushing CSA website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Let us know if your child or family member is interested.

NOTE: We have a first shift volunteer spot open on 11/17. Please let us know if you can put in an extra shift or sign up for that spot. It would be appreciated.

If you are volunteering this week, it is absolutely essential that you read the volunteer directions below. The directions are slightly different than last year, so even seasoned members need to read! Even if you are not volunteering this week, it is a good idea to become familiar with them so you understand exactly what’s going on.

2016 Volunteer Directions

SAVE THE DATE! Golden Earthworm’s annual CSA Harvest Festival will take place at the farm on Sunday, October 16th from 11am-3pm. The details will be sent in a separate email to all the CSA members so be sure to check your inboxes. They will have cooking demonstrations, live music, kids activities, walking tours…the usual farm fun! This is an invitation to all CSA members and their families. We encourage you to get to know your farm and meet your farmers – Maggie and Matt.  The farm is out in Riverhead but it is a fun day and their are other activities you can take advantage of out on the North Fork of Long Island. If anyone is willing to carpool, please let us know.

WINTER SHARES
The details of the winter share have been finalized!
***Please note that the vegetable share box is significantly smaller this year (with a lower price reflected).  Feedback from winter share members in years past indicated that the poundage was way too much to consume and that it was a negative aspect of the program.  The farm got the message and they’ve lightened it up!  ***  Anyone who would like more quantity should order multiple shares.

Winter Organic Vegetable Share – 10 lb box (nearly 1/2 the size as previous years) x 4 deliveries = $80
Winter Apple Share – 4 lb bag x 4 deliveries = $26
Winter Cider Share – 1/2 gallon jug x 4 deliveries = $18

Winter Share Delivery Dates (Thursdays)
Delivery 1 – December 15, 2016
Delivery 2 – January 12, 2017
Delivery 3 – February 9, 2017
Delivery 4 – March 9, 2017

We will have the Winter Share 2016-2017 contracts available in the next couple of weeks. They will be sent out to all members, plus we will have copies available at the pick-ups.

Mushroom Farm Fun  –  members are invited to pick mushrooms at Amy’s mushroom farm in Walkill, NY. The farm is open to the public. It is approximately a two-hour drive. There are other attractions in Walkill: antique stores, wineries which people can go to after mushroom picking.

The farm location is:

201 Lewis Lane
Wallkill, NY, 12589

Contact Aurora for more information:347-586-7921. Also let Aurora know if you are able to carpool.

This week in the shares:

Winter Squash – 2 portions – These are all edible squash – not ornamental!  You can prep them all the same way.  Cut the squash in half lengthwise and then scoop out the seeds.  You can either put these halves in a steamer and cook until the flesh is tender, or rub with olive oil and set the halves face down in a baking dish.  Sometimes I pour a few tablespoons of water around them and bake in the oven at 350F until soft.  Scoop out the flesh and season with salt and a little butter (or olive oil) and enjoy!
Storage: Winter squash should be stored at room temperature – and dry. Keep in paper bags or baskets out of direct sunlight and they will up to a month. Uses: Cooked. When to use: Within a month

Red or Yellow Potatoes – These are freshly-dug and unwashed so that they will store longer at your home. Please try to eat them within a week.
Storage: In a cool, DARK place Uses: Cooked. When to use: Within the week.

Yellow Onions – These will store well!  But it’s the perfect weather for onion soup…see delicious recipe below!
Storage: In a cool, dark well ventilated space. Uses: Raw or Cooked When to use: Within a month.

Cabbage – Wonderful for coleslaws.
Storage: In an airtight (plastic) bag in the refrigerator. Uses: Raw or Cooked When to use: Within 5 days.

Mystery Vegetable – Farmer’s Choice…

FRUIT SHARE – Mixed bag of Peaches & Gala Apples
